Spirit XT185 Treadmill Review

Last Updated: August 13, 2021

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly walking/jogging treadmill and are unconcerned about extra high-tech features, the XT185 could be the right choice for you. It’s designed for treadmill minimalists who only need a solid piece of equipment they can use every now and then to stay in shape. While we don’t recommend the XT185 for professional athletes or gadget freaks, it does offer good value for money for the casual home user.

Here’s everything you need to know about this entry-level running machine by Spirit Fitness:

  • 7.5-inch Console LCD

The XT185 features a bright blue backlit LCD screen on its console. It displays nine pieces of data at once, enabling you to keep an eye on your workout stats. While the screen lacks WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity to Smart devices and fitness apps like modern treadmills, it’s enough if you need to know all the basics like calories, distance, speed, etc.

  • 2.75 HP Motor

Admittedly, the XT185 is not the best of its kind, especially in terms of motor power. However, it can fare well for users who don’t plan on speeding up a lot. Experts recommend at least 3.0HP for a good-quality running treadmill and 2.5 HP for jogging. It’s best if you speed up to a jog and not full sprints on this one.

  • 0.8 to 16 km/h Speed, and 10 Incline Levels

The speed limit on the XT185 corresponds to its motor power. Since it can’t support fast running, it doesn’t allow that kind of speed, either. Still, 16 km/h top speed is pretty good for occasionally pushing yourself. Ten incline levels further allow you to take your calorie burn up a notch.

  • 50 x 140 cm Running Belt

We found the XT185 to be notably smaller than many popular treadmills, but that shouldn’t be an issue since it’s not made for running, anyway. Since running requires more belt length than walking, and a 140 cm length should be enough for most users in this case.

The smaller footprint also makes it a  convenient option for London flats with limited space. The deck is cushioned for a shock-absorbing, joint-protective effect during your run.

  • Lift Assist Folding

Like you would expect from any good home treadmill, the XT185 has a folding design with Lift Assist technology. This hydraulic system enables you to fold up the running deck vertically against the console without too much effort. Simply roll it away on its transport wheels for compact storage when not in use. The Safe Drop feature further allows the deck to gently unfold when required.

  • Heart Rate Monitoring

Pulse-sensing handgrips are incorporated into this model for tracking your heart rate when you hold on to them for a few seconds. Don’t rely too much on them, though – some of us found the readings to be a bit dodgy!

  • Other Features

Quick speed and incline keys on the treadmill are handy for immediate changes to your workout stance. Six training programs (manual, hill, fat burn, strength, cardio, interval) provide some workout variety. A swivel fan on the console helps keep things cool, while dual storage trays are present for convenience.

Pros

  • A budget-friendly option for simple workouts
  • 2.75 HP motor to support walking/jogging
  • Up to 16 km/h speed and 10% max incline
  • 6 cushion deck technology for joint protection
  • Enough belt width and length for comfortable jogging
  • Heart rate monitoring handgrips
  • Direct access speed and incline buttons
  • Lift Assist folding with Safe Drop feature
  • 7.5-inch console LCD for workout feedback
  • 6 training programs for workout variety
  • Swivel fan to keep you cool
  • Dual storage trays
  • 2.5” front and 2.0” rear rollers for durability

Cons

  • Lacks engaging features like Bluetooth technology, HD touchscreen, and fitness app connectivity
  • Only 6 built-in work out programs
  • The tread belt may drift due to a lack of side guides
  • Not suitable for heavy workouts

Warranty Summary

The Spirit XT185 comes with:

  • Lifetime warranty on frame, motor, and deck
  • 5-year parts warranty
  • 1-year labour warranty

Bottom Line

The XT185 lacks all the bells and whistles of modern treadmills but makes up for that with its affordable price point and user-friendly design. It’s not meant for running or heavy use, but if you need something basic for walking or jogging, this one could do great.
